Securing a better rank for a keyword is not a one time activity, instead you need to continuously update your site and be aware about the latest trends taking place in your industry.
The keyword should be chosen in such a way that they have high search volume, relatively low competition and are of immense significance to you.
I’ll be taking you through some simple tips that would really help you to reach a step closer to your dream of a better ranking keywords. So let’s roll…
1. Choose keyword with good volume
Don’t target the keywords that have low volume search nor go for the ones that could prove to be highly competitive. They are not worth your time.
E.g If you own a retail store in London and also happen to have online presence for the same, you should target keywords specific to your location.
So you should focus on keywords like online grocery store in london instead of online grocery store. The search results would be more useful for you if you go with the former option.
2. Choose keywords relevant to your industry and business
This is one of the key aspect to look for while focusing on keywords. You should target keywords that are relevant to your niche. e.g if you have grocery store website, then focusing on keywords “Fresh vegetables home delivery” would be a better choice than “Fresh carrot” or using any other product in the keyword unless you are specialized in it
Thus, keywords strictly should be as per your niche.
3. Look out for your competitor
You should continuously scan your environment and see what your competitors are doing. Tools like Semrush/Ahref can be used to find out which and how many keywords are they being ranked for. How many of them are in common with the keywords you are focusing on?
You’re should ideally look out for the way you can differentiate yourself from your competitors. You’ll need to do at least as much as your competitors are doing to beat and overcome them.
4. Focus on long tail keywords
At times, it is highly recommended to for long tail keywords. 70% of all search traffic comprises of long tail keywords. There are certain categories of products and services for which the users search via exact phrases.

E.g. if you have a bakery and have recently launched an ecommerce website where customers can come, choose cake details (Size, shape, ingredients etc), add customisations (message, pic, toppings etc) and somebody is looking out for customized photo cake for their child’s birthday party, the various search options that could be used would be as below:
- Cake
- Birthday cake
- Birthday cake for kids
- Customized photo cake
Ask yourself, what kind of keyword would best serve the purpose? The probability is quite high that you users would search with the term “Customized photo cake”
Though the search volume is relatively low in this case, but you can take the advantage of catering to a specific niche here.
5. Optimize the content on your site for your keywords
Once you’ve “gone niche” and have chosen some relevant keywords, it’s time to use those keywords in strategic places on your page. While should not overuse your keywords, it is important to use them in a an appropriate way within your content.
e.g.In your URL, title, headlines etc.
Another way of optimizing the content on your website is by creating Pillar Pages for your keywords.
Pillar Pages can boost your ranking for competitive keywords. Pillar Pages are generally longer versions of content pages which allows you to include related keywords in your content thus increasing topic relevancy which in the end leads to higher rankings.
Also, Pillar pages help you in attracting natural links from other websites and mentions from social media networks which in turn leads to increased Google trust and resulting in higher rankings.
